The first solo show in Italy of Jimmie Durham occupied the internal and external spaces of the ex-Ticosa, a restored factory by the Town of Como later demolished. The subject was stone, used by the artist as a pure instrument, something movable, a “non-monument.” All of Jimmie Durham's work puts in check the idea of monumentality that is the basis of the Western artistic tradition. In the exhibition Stones Rejected by the Builder, stones of small and large dimensions were assembled, piled on top of each other, and thrown in order to change the “customary”: the perception of common objects or situations.
