Since many years, Fondazione Antonio Ratti has dedicated itself to spreading and applying permaculture knowledge through workshops and meetings involving artists, permaculturists, geologists, botanists and agro-ecologists.
Permaculture is a design system for creating sustainable communities and environments. It offers practical tools for generating productive and efficient landscapes, social organisations and structures.
In order to strengthen new synergies, this year's experience is enriched with a broader project that applies permaculture principles to architecture, amplifying connections and cooperating more effectively with the surrounding ecosystem.
In fact, the course - coordinated by Saviana Parodi - envisages learning self-construction and renovation techniques applied to a former stone tool shed, located in the upper part of the Foundation's park, in order to convert it into a versatile, functional and self-sustainable place to host residences, meetings and activities throughout the year.

The workshop is divided into two parts:
11 - 14 October
making raw earth plasters
with Stefano Mattei
In the first, more theoretical phase, we will learn introductory elements on safety on the building site, characteristics of the soils, mortars, and raw earth. Techniques for the installation of raw earth plasters and finishes will be learnt.
In the second operational phase, the walls will be prepared, the various raw earth mortars will be prepared, and the first layer of plaster (rendering), the second layer (arriccio) and the finish (stabilitura) will be applied.
18 - 21 October
cocciopesto flooring
with Sara De Bellis
During the workshop we will learn the fundamentals of making a cocciopesto flooring, with the different functional layers: capillary insulation, thermal insulation, raw earth screed, finishing with linseed oil and beeswax. We will also delve into lime-based mortars, both aerial and hydraulic, tracing their history and uses over the centuries in different parts of the world, and applying the Roman technique of cocciopesto on the floor, and the Moroccan technique of tadelakt, a natural waterproof plaster, on the wall.
The workshops will be held in italian.
It is possible to register for only one of the two workshops or to decide to participate in both.
Participation is free and open to all, with no limits of experience or age.
The aim is to create moments of cohabitation with the place, through care and collective practices.
Courses will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunches will be communal, each participant is asked to bring their own lunch or something to share.
Important to wear safety shoes and gloves.
